Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a toddler. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
