O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving into Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as an actress in commercials and models with Montgomery Ward. She made her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Additionally, she appeared in a variety of programs. Her roles included independently produced and made-for-TV films. Her first major role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady, who played the long-haired, secretariat character from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. In addition to the actors, she received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 1995.
